Sclerotherapy Q & A
Why do I need sclerotherapy?
Both spider veins and varicose veins develop over time when the one-way valves stop functioning properly and blood pools in your veins. Sclerotherapy is one of the oldest and most effective solutions for treating these damaged veins. You may need sclerotherapy if you have problem veins that are causing:
- Pain
- Achiness
- Burning
- Itching
Sclerotherapy is ideal for cosmetic purposes, too. This nonsurgical vein treatment restores your even skin tone and can help you feel more confident about showing off your legs.
How does sclerotherapy work?
Sclerotherapy treatment from We're So Vain involves getting vein injections. Dr. Azia injects a solution known as a sclerosant directly into the problem veins. This irritating solution causes the vein to swell.
Because of the swelling effect, blood can no longer travel through your vein, causing it to shrink. Blood then recirculates to healthier veins nearby. Your treated vein becomes scar tissue over time, since your body can no longer use it, and gradually fades away.
If you have more than one varicose vein or a complex web of spider veins, Dr. Azia may recommend several injections to target all veins. In any case, the treatment itself takes just a few minutes, and you can walk around and go about many of your regular activities afterward.
When can I expect results after sclerotherapy?
As your treated veins heal after sclerotherapy, avoiding strenuous activities may be necessary. Dr. Azia might recommend short periods of walking, but no running or heavy lifting, for the first two weeks.
For minor varicose or spider veins, you should notice that they almost completely fade away in as little as three to six weeks. More complex veins may need up to three or four months to fade away.
About a month after your sclerotherapy treatment at We're So Vain, Dr. Azia has you come in for a follow-up exam. He evaluates you to ensure you’re properly healing and to see if you need another sclerotherapy session.
